The Upper Town is the oldest Kyiv, on the plateau above the river: St Sophia’s Cathedral, the Golden Gate at the top of Volodymyrska Street, and St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery facing St Sophia’s across two squares. St Andrew’s Church stands at its edge, above Podil.
